    This course explores the development of law (domestic and international) governing space operations generally, application of the law to present day national security activities, and emerging issues in national security space law.  The course will address the impact of the UN space treaties to national security activities, international and domestic law governing national security space operations, the role of commercial space actors in conflict, and current issues in national security space law.     BIOL 4948: Pop Up Astrobiology Lab II 

    Welcome to Pop-Up Labs! In the second semester of this course, we will follow the whole arc of scientific inquiry and engagement–from project design and sample collection through data generation, analysis, and interpretation. In the fall semester, we designed our project around a planetary analog environment in Iceland. We inventoried samples and extracted DNA. In the spring, we will build libraries and analyze sequencing data about this extreme environment. The year will culminate in a project proposal and presentation that motivates our research within the broader scientific literature and clearly explains our research questions and approach.     STIA 4417: National Lab Space Research Forum

    This seminar offers students a guided introduction to the cutting-edge space research conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Over the course of the semester, participants will hear from prominent LLNL scientists and engineers working on topics such as spacecraft instrumentation, remote sensing, astrophysics, planetary defense, small sats, earth system science, and astrobiology.     This will be a seminar class about the changing visions and motivations for space exploration, historically and to the present day. Readings will include historical perspectives such as those of K. Tsiolkovsky, Arthur C.     STIA 4280: Habitable Planet Lab

    This class explores the concept of extreme environments as a window into the potential habitability of other planets while also teaching students to look more closely at our own world. We will learn what types of environments on Earth are used as analogs for planetary exploration, and in what ways: testing rovers and instruments that will be sent into space, probing the limits of life at extremes of temperature, water availability, and salinity, and improving our methods of life detection.
