STIA Space Concentration

Space is a new concentration in the Bachelor of Science Foreign Service’s major in Science, Technology and International Affairs (STIA).

It explores the rapidly expanding role of outer space in global affairs, examining how science, technology, policy and security intersect beyond Earth.

Concentration overview

Students will study topics such as satellite systems and space governance, commercial space ventures, planetary science, and the militarization of orbit, while also considering the ethical and environmental implications of humanity’s presence in space. The concentration encourages students to develop depth in a specific area of focus—such as space policy and diplomacy; commercial and civil space; science, exploration, and planetary environments; or space security and defense.

Curriculum

In addition to the STIA Core, a gateway course is required, as well as courses chosen from Space Studies electives.

Required gateway course

  • STIA 4005: Foundations of Space Studies

Recommended science pathway

This following science pathway for this concentration is currently under consideration by the faculty, with anticipated approval by Spring 2026:

  • STIA 2270 (Earth and Planetary Science),
  • STIA 4418 (Astronomy and Astrophysics),
  • One Space Applications Lab (courses designated as “Lab” with the title), or PHYS 2051 & 2052 or PHYS 2101 & 2102 (which include laboratory components).

Students are also encouraged to build analytical and technical proficiency through courses in GIS, remote sensing or mission design.
